The certified reference design incorporates ITDev's IPMX Receive (RX) and Transmit (TX) FPGA IP cores together with supporting software, providing a ready-to-evaluate platform for organisations developing next-generation media-over-IP products and solutions.

IPMX (Internet Protocol Media Experience) is a suite of open standards and specifications that extends SMPTE ST 2110-based media transport and NMOS-based control into a wider range of applications beyond traditional broadcast. The standard has been developed to address the needs of markets including professional AV, live events, higher education, corporate communications and medical systems, enabling interoperable, high-quality media transport over standard IP infrastructure.

The certified implementation demonstrates support for key IPMX technologies including:

4K video transport

HDMI including EDID management

NMOS device discovery and control

Precision Time Protocol (PTP) timing synchronisation

10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity

Certification of the reference design was carried out using AMD's ZCU106 development platform. While the certified reference design demonstrates these capabilities, ITDev's underlying FPGA IP cores support a broader feature set and can be integrated into a wide range of customer-specific hardware platforms.

Achieving certification validates interoperability with other IPMX-compliant devices and provides customers with confidence that ITDev's technology aligns with industry-led open standards. As adoption of IP-based media architectures continues to accelerate, interoperability is becoming increasingly important for system integrators, OEMs and end users seeking flexible, multi-vendor solutions.

"Achieving IPMX certification is an important milestone for ITDev and demonstrates our commitment to open, interoperable media networking standards. By certifying our FPGA-based reference design, we've shown that OEMs can confidently build products using our IPMX technology, knowing it has been independently tested alongside other solutions within the ecosystem. We believe IPMX will play a key role in the future of professional AV and related markets, and we're excited to help customers accelerate their adoption of these technologies." from Phil Chilton, Commercial Manager.

The certification reflects ITDev's continued investment in open standards-based media networking technologies and reinforces its commitment to helping customers accelerate the development of IPMX-enabled products. By providing FPGA IP cores, software, and reference designs that simplify implementation, ITDev enables equipment manufacturers to reduce development effort and bring interoperable media-over-IP solutions to market more quickly.

With it's various fields of application, IPMX is helping to drive the next generation of flexible and scalable media systems. ITDev's certified IPMX technology provides a proven foundation for organisations looking to adopt these emerging standards and deliver high-performance media transport over IP networks.

This initiative has paved the way for a range of supportive resources aimed at fostering a healthier, more balanced workplace.

Mental Health First Aid & Employee Assistance Programme

They say that people are your greatest asset. Well here at ITDev we believe that is true and have developed a culture that not only celebrates staff successes but are also committed to staff welfare too.

We take pride in our commitment to our staff’s welfare, providing a supportive and thriving workplace culture and we recognise the significance of providing comprehensive support for all of our staff.

We have invested in dedicated Mental Health First Aiders who are a point of contact for any colleague who may be experiencing a mental health issue or emotional distress. They can recognise the signs if a colleague may be experiencing mental ill health and will be there to offer them support and/or signpost them to relevant assistance. They promote good mental health within ITDev and have taken steps to reduce the stigma that is associated with mental health issues, with colleagues reaching out for professional or personal support.

We have also introduced an Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) which is available to all staff from day one of employment.

It’s a vital resource designed to promote mental health and emotional wellbeing among our team.

The nature of our work is that it often involves deadlines, complex problem-solving and ever-evolving technologies. Our staff can choose to work from home if they prefer and we are very much aware of the importance of a healthy work-life balance for their well-being. The EAP can offer resources and strategies to help our staff manage their time effectively, set boundaries, and prioritise self-care.

It offers confidential support designed to help employees navigate personal challenges that may impact their well-being and performance at work. It provides a range of resources to support mental health, work-life balance, and overall employee wellness.

It provides access to a range of services including counselling, mental health support, legal assistance, financial guidance and more.

At ITDev, we agree that our employees are our greatest asset. By having dedicated Mental Health First Aiders and implementing an Employee Assistance Programme, we create a supportive and nurturing work environment that prioritises the well-being of our staff and where every individual can thrive, bringing a positive work environment and laying the foundation for long-term success.

A software graduate's experience with Luke

At ITDev, we are dedicated to nurturing the next generation of engineers. By fostering a team rich in experience and fresh ideas, we enhance every project we undertake. In this blog post, Luke, a University of York graduate, shares his journey and insights from his first 3 years with us:

Luke's experience

As I prepared to move to Southampton, I began my search for embedded software positions and discovered ITDev on Indeed and LinkedIn. ITDev stood out as a perfect fit for my career aspirations in embedded software. Their website showcased numerous awards and a vibrant company culture, complete with exciting social events, giving me a glimpse of the dynamic work environment I could be part of.

Since I have been at ITDev I’ve utilised a far broader range of skills than I initially anticipated. Beyond writing C/C++ for microcontrollers, I’ve also worked with Python, C#, and PHP/JS, targeting GUI applications and even applying my electronics and PCB design knowledge. Although these skills weren’t highlighted in the job description, I found opportunities to use them once I joined. Additionally, I’ve already spent considerable time in client meetings and directly communicating with clients via email. This experience reflects the trust ITDev places in its graduate employees. Over time, I’ve contributed to a diverse array of projects, both internal and client-focused as follows:

Marine Client

Collaborating as part of a team of software developers over an extended period, I saw this project evolve from (near) inception through to production prototypes. This journey involved me making design decisions and adhering to existing client code and protocols. I also had the opportunity to deep dive (no pun intended!) into Bluetooth Low Energy, gaining significant embedded and electronic engineering crossover experience.

Working closely with a colleague, I’ve gained experience in hardware design guided by software requirements and similarly software design influenced by hardware requirements, such as the need for low power consumption. My work has also involved debugging with oscilloscopes and logic analysers. I find projects that straddle the line between software and electronics engineering particularly enjoyable, and the insights gained from team discussions are invaluable. Additionally, I’ve become well-versed in Agile/Scrum methodologies and adapting to changing customer requirements.

Internal - Client Portal Project

As well as the client engagements, ITDev gave me the opportunity to be involved in an internal Research & Development (R&D) project. Here I was the sole developer, tasked with advancing the software development which had been previously worked on a by a colleague. This provided opportunities to develop different skills from the previous project: adopting someone else's code, understanding their approach, communicating efficiently with them to maximise the value gained from time limited discussions and being the only software resource on the project.

Visual / Microscopy Client

Joining this project midway through, I dove into reviewing and fixing legacy code alongside a seasoned engineer. This experience required me to adapt to a new workflow, quite different from my previous roles. It was a fantastic opportunity to put my C++ skills to the test and deepen my understanding of FPGAs through collaborative teamwork. Additionally, I leveraged my university knowledge on High Dynamic Range, HDR, whilst my passion for photography also proved surprisingly useful in this context.

The experience gained has not just been on existing code and products, its included new “greenfield” software and has given me the freedom to make technical decisions and be aware of the project commercials, estimating and quoting aspects too.

Company Support

As well as the project work, there is a good support structure in the company as well.

ITDev have been good at promoting and organising training opportunities – I took a course to get up to speed with C++. One of the main takeaways from my internship (at a different company) was how much there was to learn by working with experienced engineers. I’ve certainly benefitted from that at ITDev too, whether it’s code review, asking for help with a problem, or anecdotes in casual conversation. It’s been interesting to learn more about electronics and FPGAs from working on projects with a mix of software and hardware.

In addition to the technical roles, I took a first aid training course earlier this year and am now one of the designated first-aiders in the office.

We appreciate Luke's time to share his experiences. It's great to see and hear how he has settled in to become a valued member of the ITDev team. With his aptitude for learning new skills, and willingness to take on new projects we're looking forward to see how his career develops further.

Alongside the technical management we also provide mentoring, with each employee assigned a mentor to help support their career development.
Hire A Contractor Or Outsource? Make Sure You Get Value

Recently I was in discussion with a potential client about the challenges he was having with resourcing one of his projects. His automatic assumption was to approach a contract agency to get one or two contractors to backfill his shortage. Naturally, I asked whether he'd previously considered the alternative of using a design services consultancy. His reply … “No, is there a difference?” … provided the impetus for this blog.

There ARE differences, and you should carefully consider what your requirements are before selecting one or the other as they each have their own benefits and there is no one right answer as to which approach you should use.

I've captured some considerations below to help when making the choice. In a follow up article, I will explore some of the questions you should ask potential design consultancies before engaging them.

A question of either/or?
Firstly, we’ll start by highlighting that this is not a black or white decision. There are multiple factors to consider and depending on your position the outcome will be different. It is likely that the answers you give now will be different for the next project, which may affect your choice, so remember to re-evaluate each time.

Are you looking for a transactional engagement or longer term relationship?
As a design consultancy we are interested in building longer term engagements. Yes, we do short transactional contracts when needed, but our preference is to engage for the longer term. A consultancy can invest in the relationship, through training staff on the clients' products, knowledge sharing, having multiple resources assigned to a project and most importantly understanding the business's situation and motivations. Consultancies can support the client by providing a pool of resources with product knowledge, who can cover each other during periods of unavailability (sickness, holiday …).
When choosing a contractor, unless you are prepared to pay a retainer during periods of no contract, you cannot guarantee access to the same individual. This may not be an issue for resolving a specific challenge today, but will you need support in the future when a field return needs debugging or the IP needs feature enhancing?

Broad and deep knowledge?
Contractors often come with very strong skill sets, ideal for working on a specific product in a specific market. This can be a cost-effective way to bring an industry expert into your team to achieve a specific aim in an efficient manner. Sometimes you're not fully aware of the skill set you need, or you need multiple skills which you can't find from a single contractor, so need to employ 2 or 3.
One of our clients appreciated our Agile approach to projects. They engaged us for a series of Scrum sprints. At one of the retrospectives they highlighted the benefit of engaging us as an organisation vs an individual contractor. Although primarily a software development project, having access to a multi-disciplinary team of resources with depth of skills in different areas was a key benefit. We were able to provide strong IT skills, in depth Linux kernel knowledge as well as experience in timing based protocols, whilst still only committing one “full time engineer” to the project.

Management overhead
Do you wish to be managing the resource?
As another member to your team, a contractor will be another head to manage, along with the invoicing and payment, which naturally increases with multiple contractors. They are accountable to the project manager and require tasks to be specified and allocated like any resource.
If you wish to be more hands-off or offload the responsibility to someone else, a consultancy can manage that for you, with a single report and invoice to generate even when you engage multiple resources. Depending on the size of consultancy, they could manage the project for you, ensure delivery against requirements and provide visibility of progress – often through on-line tooling.

Risk management
Typically, consultancies will offer Time & Materials and Fixed Price contracts. Fixed Price options take the risk away - you know the full cost of a project up-front with warranties and support. Time & Materials means you shoulder and manage the risk, equivalent to having a contractor working with your team. If you’re risk adverse, or the CFO is running the business, fixed price is likely to be your preference, a known up-front cost with guaranteed deliverables. With a lesser defined package of work, time & materials gives you greater flexibility to be agile with your requirements.

Hopefully this has given you some questions to consider before automatically picking up the phone to your contractor agency.

An example of the long-term engagement benefit seen by one of our clients:
Background: we’d had 10 years of rolling contracts with a client which had had to stop due to changes with their business situation. 12 months later they had an urgent project they needed to address internally. To backfill the move of their resources on to the new project they approached us, knowing we had the intimate knowledge of their products to be able to carry on their developments with minimal ramp up time and knowledge transfer required.

If you're interested in finding out more about consultancies and whether they might be the right fit for your next project or an alternative solution to a contractor, get in contact for a chat either on sales@itdev.co.uk or calling 023 80 98 8890.

And a final thought from one client we've engaged:
"You're not a supplier, you're part of our team".

Author:

Jon O
